**Honest review - YouFoodz

Their website is full of beautifully photographed food that will make your mouth water! I had extremely high hopes when I placed my first YouFoodz order. I hadn't ever tried one of their meals but I had only heard good things from influencers online. They even have Tanya Hennessy on board now.

I posted a little haul on my insta story when they arrived (which I stupidly didn't save) and went through everything I got. I've decided to review each meal we got individually because there were some good points and some not so good points.

Between Ben and I and having an extremely busy weekend, we managed to finish all six meals and four snacks by Sunday night.

Being fans of honesty over fake praise, we decided to share our UNFILTERED, IMMEDIATE thoughts on the YouFoodz meals. Keep in mind, Ben was not overly impressed, and I've written down what he was yelling about as he tried them. You have been warned haha.

So here are our HONEST thoughts. *All photos are from the YouFoodz website as I was silly and didn't think to take any photos but I am hoping our words can set the scene.

Zinga Chicken

*Photo taken from the YouFoodz website - I totally forgot to take photos! Whilst it did look similar, it didn't look as fresh.
I ordered two of these because they looked really yummy. This one was a little too spicy for me and I had to have a glass of milk with the meal (I don't do spicy so not sure why I thought ZINGA was a good idea). It was pretty tasty though and I did enjoy it.

From Ben:
Surprisingly good, though small. Breading was well done, sauce was nice. Again, not at all filling, but yeah, quite nice. Would appreciate more chicken in the thing.

For $9.95, it's definitely not a filling meal for someone with a bigger appetite.

MACROS:

*taken from the YouFoodz website

The macros for this one aren't too bad actually. The carbs are high, but depending on what the rest of your day looks like, you can definitely fit this one in without feeling guilty.

Ingredients:
Zinga Chicken (40%) (Chicken Tenderloin, Sweet Chilli Sauce (Palm Sugar, Water, Red Chili, Vinegar, Salt, Garlic), Flour, Sriracha, Bread Crumbs, Garlic, Oregano, Garlic Powder, Chicken Stock Powder, Black Pepper, Chilli Powder), White Potato, Broccoli (19%), Smokey Mayo (10%) (Mayonnaise, Sriracha, Smoked Paprika), Black Pepper. Contains: Wheat, Egg & Soy.

Sushi Bowl

*Taken from the YouFoodz website
This one we received for free as a part of a promotion. I gave this one to Ben as it didn't look very appetising to me. It didn't look anything like the photo and the chicken looked a little soggy, as did the beans.

Ben:
Looks unappetising. Chicken tastes good, though sauce heavy. Rice is rice. Hard to ruin that one. The beans they included? Goddam horrendous. Out of ten, it gets 5. I like meat, and carbs, but not with a serve of moosh on the side.*some words may have been substituted for other words lol

MACROS

*Taken from the YouFoodz website

Lots of protein which is always nice with not a bad balance of carbs but a lot of fat for one meal.

Ingredients:
Chicken Breast (39%), White Rice (22%), Green Beans, Sushi Dressing (9%) (Soy Sauce, Sesame Oil, Ginger, Garlic), Black Sesame Seeds, Mayonnaise, Sushi Ginger, Vinegar, White Sugar, Sweet Soy, Sesame Seeds. Contains: Wheat, Egg, Soy & Sesame.

Thai Chicken and Cashew

*Taken from the YouFoodz website

This one I actually didn't mind. It wasn't restaurant quality by any means but I enjoyed it and I would definitely order it again. It would have been a lot better if the noodles were a bit fresher. The broccoli was nice and crunchy though which I love!

MACROS:

*taken from the YouFoodz website
I am really impressed with the macros of this meal. Great balance of everything. A little high on the sugar but I just keep my daily sugar intake under 60g.

Ingredients:
Chicken Breast (33%), Egg Noodles (29%), Broccoli, Honey, Sweet Chilli Sauce, Cashew, Tomato Sauce, Soy Sauce, Sesame Oil, Vinegar, Sriracha (0.5%), Garlic, Oyster Sauce, Brown Sugar, Sambal Oelek, Thai Seasoning (1%). Contains: Wheat, Egg, Tree Nuts, Fish & Sesame Seeds.

Supergreen Spaghetti

*Pic taken from the YouFoodz website.... it has so much promise, right?!!

Ok so I LOVE greens and I LOVE pesto and I LOVE spaghetti. So I was really looking forward to this meal and I had it Sunday night after a really long weekend.
I could not have been more let down. There was absolutely NO taste whatsoever. It was spicy but not tasty spicy.. it was just hot. I am not sure what pesto they're using but it sure doesn't taste like any pesto I have ever had. Not even the broccoli was enjoyable and I LOVE broccoli.
I definitely wouldn't recommend this one to anyone and I would definitely recommend YouFoodz look in to making this one better or taking it off the menu. Paying $9.95 for no taste is just ridiculous.

MACROS (not that I should bother - I want these macros back)

*taken from the YouFoodz website.

I don't really want to talk about it lol

Ingredients:
Spaghetti (50%), Broccoli (12%), Zucchini (12%), Green Pea (8%), Pesto (8%) (Parsley, Basil, Spinach, Chilli Flakes, Oil, Pine Nuts, Garlic), Cream. Contains: Wheat, Milk & Tree Nuts.

Balinese Chicken and Cashew Noodles

*photo taken from the YouFoodz website
So I gave this one to Ben for dinner Sunday night. So a review from Ben is:
Cons - Dry and chewy, the Balinese chicken and cashew noodles was f**king gross. The meat was overdone and like eating clumpy sawdust a dog had shat on. Noodles were plain foul. The goddam cashews didn't even taste good, and I love cashews! Having eaten quite a few delicious Balinese dishes, I am confident in saying it's probably not meant to taste like unwashed dish cloth. Pros - well presented.
I had a taste and whilst I wouldn't have described it quite so harshly, I could see where he was coming from. Another dish with so much potential with really little taste.  Between us, we didn't even finish half of this meal which says a lot!

MACROS

Good protein, good balance of carbs and fats. Shame about the taste.

Ingredients:
Rice Noodles (43%), Balinese Chicken Mince (28%), Green beans, Green Cabbage, Cashews (15%), Curry Powder, Coriander, Shallots, Turmeric, Sesame Oil, Vegetable Oil, Gluten Free Soy Sauce. Contains: Soy, Cashews & Sesame.

Homestyle Chicken Rissoles with red pesto veg

*taken from the YouFoodz website

I did quite enjoy this meal. It was very tasty. The rissoles however, didn't look like homestyle rissoles, they looked more like mass produced flat patties but they still weren't THAT bad. I would just be inclined to take the 'homesty;e' out of the name as they looked nothing like the photo from the website.

MACROS

Lots of protein, healthy dose of fat which made me watch my fat intake for the rest of the day but overall, not horrible.

Ingredients:
Red Pesto Vegetables (62%) [Cauliflower 40%, Broccoli 38%, Pesto (12%) [Semi Dried Tomato, Onion, Garlic, Parsley, Pine Nuts, Vegetable Oil, Chilli, Parmesan Cheese], Potato (10%)], Chicken Rissole (34%) [Chicken Mince, Rosemary, Parsley, Bread Crumbs, Rice Vinegar, Tuscan Seasoning, Salt, Pepper, Sugar] Contains: Pine Nuts, Wheat & Milk.

The Protein Brownie

*photo taken from YouFoodz website - looks nothing like this and is maybe 2/3 the size of this
Ok.. Please do not claim yourself as a protein brownie when you have more carbohydrates than protein and PLEASE do not charge me $4.95 for something that isn't much longer than my pinkie finger.
It tasted good, off course it did, it has 6g of sugar in the tiny little bar. This 'protein' bar should be $2.50 max.

MACROS

*photo taken from the YouFoodz website
Not what you want for a 55g serving. Don't buy this, make your own.

Ingredients:
Gluten Free Brownie Mix (55%) (Sugar, Tapioca Starch, Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Cocoa Powder, Baking Powder, Emulsifier (471,481), Vegetable Gum (415)) , Egg, Water, Canola Oil, Whey Protein Powder (9%). Contains: Egg & Whey Protein Isolate.

Choc Cherry Protein Balls

*photo taken from the YouFoodz website
Another one I am very disappointed in. Again, they taste great because they have 6g of sugar in EACH ball! It says right there on the packet "NO ADDED SUGAR" yet the MAIN ingredient is CONDENSED MILK... and we all know what condensed milk is made out of. I just don't know where the "no added sugar' comes from and I would really love an explanation for this. It just makes me so angry that people could be buying these snacks thinking they are so super healthy but they aren't. 6g of sure in one 20g ball is almost 1/3 sugar! This is the reason they taste so good but I can make healthier ones that taste just as nice. These are also ridiculously overpriced at $4.95.

MACROS

See for yourself.

Ingredients:
Condensed Milk (Milk, Sugar), Whey Protein Powder (12%), Coconut, Almond Meal, Glace Cherries (12%), Cranberry, Biscuit Crumbs, Cocoa Powder (1%), Maple Syrup. Contains: Wheat, Milk & Tree Nuts.

Peanut Butter Protein Balls

*Photo taken from the YouFoodz website
For those that have been following me for a while now know that I love chocolate and I love peanut butter. What I do not love is when my chocolate somehow smells of what I can only describe as wrong.
They smelled so bad, Ben didn't even want to taste one. I ate one, one whole one (forcefully so I could get the full taste for this review). I actually said out aloud "Oh my god these taste like balls...and not the good kind". They are disgusting. I don't know what type of dark chocolate they are using but they need to stop right now. I don't know if they accidentally got rolled in fish or some other rotten substance but something wasn't right with these. I threw the other one in the bin and I NEVER waste chocolate (or peanut butter for that matter). Overpriced, gross and again loaded with sugar.. which this time could not save the taste.

MACROS

*photo taken from the YouFoodz website
Meh meh meh. Not healthy.

Ingredients:
Dark Chocolate (24%) (Sugar, Vegetable Fat, Cocoa Powder, Emulsifiers (Soy Lecithin - 322, 492), Salt, Flavours), Vegetable Oil, Apricots, Dates, Sultanas, Whey Protein Isolate (27%), Peanuts (7%), Gluten Free Flour. Contains: Milk, Soy & Peanuts.

So that is everything we ordered. Whilst I know the review is mostly negative due to taste, minus the snacks, if you can find the good meals amongst the bunch, it really can be a good alternative when you're too busy to prepare food rather than turning to takeaway foods which let's face it are must more than $10 per meal these days. It's also a great way to control portions but I definitely don't recommend for anyone who needs 2000+ calories per day as you would just be spending too much money.

YouFoodz, if you're reading, I would be happy to provide some suggestions on what you can do to rectify the above negative reviews. I have loads of ideas.

Let me know if you've ever tried YouFoodz in the comments and what you loved (or didn't) about them.

If you want me to review more, let me know and I am happy to take a whim and try out some more in the hopes of finding some good, healthy, meal alternatives for busy nights. The concept is so good, the delivery was next day and waiting in a cooler box when I got home. They just need a bit of work in the taste department (and snack prices).

Keep smiling
Tahana xo

  1. Love a great honest review! Honestly, I'm not all that impressed by the look of them. I can see if you were time poor these would be a great alternative to take out and the like though, which is probably their target audience? Not something I'll be trying anytime soon. Props for the honest review and good work at censoring Ben hahaha

  3. I got my youfoodz from IGA. The only good thing is I could at least see myself which ones looked good and which ones didn't. I'm so glad you told me about the snacks I will avoid them. ☺️

  6. Really interesting review. I honestly loved majority of the food I've tried from YouFoodz and I paid for it all. I also lost weight, which was my aim with trying the food. Appreciate your honesty xx

  7. Loved this review Tahana! As I said, I am trying out some of the meals this week but I don't think I ordered any of the same ones as you, maybe the cashew and chicken one so we shall see how I go! I also plan on posting a review! I wonder what other meal delivery services are out there? Maybe you can try out a few? Ben's comments also made me laugh out loud!!!

  10. Awesome and honest review! I have tried a few pre-packaged meals before and they do leave a little to be desired. I also love that you included the macros.. I think its easy for these meals to have the perception of healthy when they really could be anything but!

    1. So hit and miss at the moment. Hopefully they can take the feedback on board. Some, as we said, were really nice! Was a little disappointed with the Macros for the treats but I guess that's why we always have to be on our toes with nutrition.

  11. Love the honesty in this post! I've always wondered about these companies and whether the food was any good. I am lazy when it comes to cooking, but I don't know I would drop to using one of these!

  12. Great review! To be honest, the main place I ever hear about YouFoodz is from paid influencers. I don't even know if they even try it before recommending it - which I don't trust! They certainly have a good marketing campaign.

  14. I've tried a few services like this and they are just never as good as a fresh cooked meal! Even the brownie was disappointing so it's definitely a no go for me who is a huge sweet tooth! Plus it is still super expensive! $10 a meal is not cheap haha

  16. This is such a great review, I love your honesty. I can't say I'm really tempted. I think I would rather make my own because the servings are really very small for a dinner. I would still be hungry and I'm not even a big eater :/

  17. Wow! I'm so glad you wrote an honest review and didn't sugar coat it! (Haha, see what I did there!!) Anyway, doesn't sound or look very appealing to me, but I applaud you for giving everything a go so that you could write a full review, it must not have been easy!

  18. Your honesty us truly refreshing. I had often toyed with the idea of premade meals, as full time work and a blogging side hustle keep me crazy busy. But i think It'd be cheaper, more wholesome and tastier just cooking my own meals.

Love this review Tahana - especially Ben's outbursts haha

  19. I have been ordering Youfoodz for about 8 weeks now! At first there was one or two each order that I wasn't overly impressed with but now that I know what I love and don't love I find them soooo great! I order every week and usually get the lasagnes, spag bogs etc and halve them and have them with salad or veg! Agree with you about the snacks I think they would be better of called 'treats'. Although I would prefer to eat a brownie with 200 cals and 15g of protein and know exactly how to track it in my fitness pal than eat a home made one not by myself and eat upward of 350 cals and zilch protein! They're good in moderation and easier for strict macro trackers if you don't have the time or skill to make yourself :)

    1. Overall I think you foodz are probably the best tasting on the market. They reach out to a broader range too... Some people just want the meals for convenience and aren't all about super clean eating and I think you foodz deliver a huge range of meals not only for gym junkies! So much better not having feral chicken that's been frozen with a side of broccoli and sweet potato mash like lots of others do! And not horrible tasting like lite and easy!

  22. Thank you so much for these reviews. I have been getting Marley Spoon which I quite like, but as a shiftworker, there are weeks when i cannot be bothered to cook. I have been recommended youfoodz but from a friend of a friend who gets them, so not direct advice. You make an extremely good point about the condensed milk/sugar aspect. That is just blatant BS on their part. Thankyou once again.x
