How long does it take to lose weight?


OK STOP right there.

I want to ask you WHY you typed this question in to Google or WHY you were drawn to this post?

More and more I am seeing women comment on progress photos asking 'how long did it take you to lose the weight' or asking in general "How long does it take to lose 20kg?"

THERE IS NO ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION ... let me tell you why!

Everyone is different

Every single person is different. Body composition, height, genetics, race, age and a number of other factors ALL play a part in your body's ability to lose fat and at what rate. You simply cannot say because someone else lost 20kg or went from a size 14 to a size 10 in six months that you can or should do the same. It doesn't matter how long it takes, as long are you are constantly working towards where YOU want to be, you are amazing. Stop worrying about how everyone else got to where they are. That's their journey. Focus on yours.

Your body composition will change

Your body composition is your percentage of muscle, fat and water inside your body. When you're eating right and working out, your composition will change and effect your weight. If you're lifting weights regularly, your body composition will obviously be made up by a lot of muscle which takes up less space than fat although weighing the same (yes they lie when they say muscle weighs less than fat - they weigh the same, the composition of the two are just different). So your weight may not change, but your size, measurements and composition will. So you'll be getting results but if you're too concerned about how much you weigh, you won't notice your achievements.

It's not all about weight

I get it, I do, I've been there.. I've been obsessed with my weight to the point where I would weigh myself twice a day. Through educating myself and experiencing first hand how little weight actually means, I now rarely weigh myself, and if I do, it's out of pure curiosity. I've said this in a few of my previous blog posts but you can literally have 10 women (or even men) line up and all weigh 70kg and they will all look completely different! Some will be short, some will be tall, some will have very little fat, some will have more, some will have lots of muscle. Literally, all worrying about weight is doing is setting unrealistic goals for yourself. Focus on measurements, how you feel, what you can do that you couldn't before and most importantly, how healthy you are now - these are the important things. A certain weight does not equal healthy!



My thought process is 'do not set a goal weight, set a goal to get to a point where you don't care what you weigh because  you feel and look amazing'. You cannot put a time frame on that. If it takes you six months, great! If it takes you a year, great! If you have to slowly make your way to your goal in order to stick to a healthy lifestyle, great!

Goal for tonight: go home and throw out your scales (or put them in a cupboard and only bring them out every few months), buy a tape measure and start a journal with non weight related goals and focus on them. e.g. complete a 5km run, squat 50kg, go hiking etc. Be sure to track how you're feeling through out your journey to healthy. Trust me when I say you will notice how much better everything seems!

  1. I'm not trying to lose weight but I did go through a time in my life where the scales were like the devil to me! I think throwing them out is a great idea because there are too many factors that affect the number on the scale. I think going by how you feel and what physical changes you can see is probably the best bet, the old fashioned way!

  2. What an amazing post! Definitely something for me to think about as I re-start on my health and fitness journey today after having a huge lapse. It's so hard not to focus on weight when the scales keep growing and you feel gross in your clothes, but I know that measurements really mean the most. I remember slipping into a bridesmaid dress for my brother's wedding that was way too small about 6 months before the wedding and when I wore it on the day and it fit perfectly, it gave me more confidence than any scale could do. Hoping to get back there one day (soon) but I don't know exactly when hehe.

  3. I totally agree with you on people are different.. I think the first step should be accepting your body and don't put too much focus on your weight thereby with the right efforts, you will definately shed the weight..

  4. Great post, I visited your blog not expecting this at all but I am glad I did. I can't deny that seeing a certain number on a scale makes me feel elated. My body is very stubborn and I can push and run and only eat salad and it still refuses to shed certain pounds but progress makes me happy and that's how I measure it. I should change that, the number isn't always correct for a start and there are better ways to measure progress. Thanks for sharing, an important reminder it's so easy to fall into bad habits and wanting to rush to get to your destination. Sometimes it is the journey and the struggle that counts. Xxx

  5. Love this post! With my first I gained 25 kgs but only ever managed to lose 10 kgs. With my second I only gained about 8 kgs and lost it all one week after birth. Everyone's different but every single pregnancy is different too! Totally agree that it's all about how we feel, and yes - focus on measurements, not the number on the scales!

I am doing an 8 week challenge and had a weight goal in mind... today we did our half way mark measurements and my weight changed very little (-2kg) but my measurements showed a different story - my body has shrunk in all the right places! So, I decided not to care about my weight when the 8 weeks are up, whatever it may be! x

  7. Such an amazing post! I have battled with my weight for years. I also threw my scales out a couple of years ago so my daughter would never know that it was "normal" to weigh yourself. I love your point about having a fitness goal, it is a great way to change the way you think about health and weight.
