The Primer Party

When you're beauty obsessed and on top of that, you're a beauty blogger, you end up with A LOT of products. I feel like I have tried thousands of primers over the last year.

Here are the ones I've tried recently. Some I love, some I hate, some would be better suited to other skin types.

Maxfactor All Day Primer* AUD$31.95

This one is a day primer for me and it pairs perfectly with my HG (holy grail) foundation Cover Girl 3in1 Out Last Stay Fabulous. It's SPF 20+ (But in no way does it resemble a sunscreen formula) so it gives me extra sun protection which is extremely important to me during the day. It's quite a thick formula compared to the other primers I use but a small amount spreads quite far over the face and neck. I like to let this one set on the face for a minute or two before I put my foundation on as because I always like to let sunscreen products absorb in to my skin before putting anything else over the top. This one is the perfect every day primer, its not matte, its not glowy, its just perfect. It is a little on the pricey side for a drug store primer but a little goes a long way and this pump bottle will last you months!

Benefit Porefessional* AUD$53

The ultimate pore filler. I really love how well this fills in my pores. No matter what primer I set out to use, I always know that more often than not, I will end up mixing this one in or applying this one first just to fill in my pores (who doesn't hate pores?!). You only need a really tiny bit so the tube will last you quite a while and you will definitely get your $53 worth!

Emergen C Red Carpet Primer AUD$45

My favourite primer I have ever used. It's like Porefessional but better and hydrates my skin. This one is now empty and I still haven't gotten around to getting a new tube. Mainly because I don't know where to get it from and I haven't bothered to research because I have so many others to try I can't justify spending extra money on primers at the moment. This one is perfect for special occasions. Weddings, parties, dates... it will have you looking FLAWLESS

Stefan makeup - Glow* AUD$29.95

A perfect mixer! Porefessional and this one together is  perfect combination. Pore filling PLUS hydration and a beautiful glow? Yes please. I use this combo on weekends and I just love the way it looks. Sad because this one is also now empty but will definitely be picking up some more when it comes time to stock up again! Another plus is it smells AMAZING!

Innoxa - Restore Lift & Firm Primer* AUD$24.95

I admit I didn't give this one a good try because I instantly hated it because it smells like playdough. I wore it once and it didn't do anything overly special and the smell was just really distracting all day even after applying foundation, powder and the rest of my routine. If I get desperate one day, I MAY give it another shot but the smell is just so off putting.

Garnier - Perfect Blur 5 second Smoothing Base AUD$16.99

No matter how I say it, it's going to sound rude but I feel like this is the poor version of Porefessional except its not the best dupe at all. When you use it by itself for a no make up day, its great! However, add foundation in to the mix and it sort of just moves around your face and doesn't help make up set well at all. Definitely recommend for make up free days when you don't want to waste your Porefessional although I won't be repurchasing once I have run out.

NYX - Porefiller AUD$21.95

I had such high hopes for this one considering the before and after photo they use to advertise it. To be honest, it's not the best formula. Its really thick and hasn't worked well with my foundation so I kind of just put it in a drawer and forgot about it. I used it again just to refresh my mind and it's just not for me. Another one you could potentially use by itself on no make up days but doesn't work well with foundation.

NYX - Photo-loving Primer AUD$19.95

Green is amazing for toning down redness. I find this one is great at filling in the pores and gives quite a nice base. It is super thick so I only like to use a tiny bit and spread over my face using a clean brush. It does help calm down redness in the skin but it's just not amazing enough to repurchase.

Revlon - Photo ready Skinlights AUD$29.95

Not a primer by itself but I like to mix it with Porefessional (just like Stefan Glow) for a beautiful glowy look. Try it out for yourself if you have it!

L'Oreal - Revitalift Miracle Blur (Magic Blur ) AUD$24.99

Another let down. I got this quite a while ago I admit and I only held on to it because I bought it in the states. Carly Bybel used to rave about this so I gave it a go but again, does not work with foundation. Great by itself. Lucky I have so many no make up days lately, I'm getting to use them all up!

Innoxa - Skin perfecting Pore vanishing Cream AUD$17.95

I bought this one off Lauren Curtis' recommendation but unfortunately, I don't love it like she did. It kind of filled my pores and made them a little less noticeable but it is really drying on my skin and made my makeup look cakey in certain areas of my face. I would say it's another one to wear without makeup but it actually makes me white as a ghost when it goes on AND again with the playdough smell... what is up Innoxa??. I think this would maybe suit those with more oily skin/ I have definitely heard of plenty of people who do love this product.

The Body Shop Intant Blur* AUD 24.95

I realised going in to writing this post that this tube was actually unopened! I thought I had used it a few times and not liked it. Boy was I wrong. The seal was still on when I went to refresh my mind about the formula so I chucked it on under some BB cream and powder and OMG. The most perfect finish. I had complements on my skin all day. It really fills in the pores and blurs out most other imperfections! For $25, I would say this is the closest dupe to Porefessional I have found.

Rimmel Fix & Protect* AUD$13.95

A primer with SPF 25?! "What are they thinking" was my initial thought...I don't particularly like any product, that isn't actually sun cream that contains SPF BUT this one is actually really good. When it goes on, it does have a sun cream look on your face but with in a minute or two, it has completely soaked in and you're ready for your foundation. Perfect day time primer and perfect to wear alone on quick trips to the beach or walks to the shops where you wouldn't need more than SPF 25.

So... do you love any I hate or hate any I love? Just remember, these are my personal experiences... what works for me may not work for you and vice-versa.

Keep smiling!

  2. Great review, I love me some primer specially as my skin is super oily I really need that extra step to help prolong my makeup and keep it actually on my face. I have tried so many over my time and trying to find the right one for your skin is so hard. I have personally been loving the Hourglass primer which I had hoped wasn't going to be any good because of the price tag haha. I have heard so many good things about the body shop primer but I am yet to try it out yet.

    1. The Hourglass primer is definitely on my too try list along with the Too Faced Hangover Primer. The Body Shop one really surprised me! I've been a little disappointed with them lately with their lack of scents but this was a really good saviour for them! <3

  3. Love your little roundup! Out of all those my favourites are the Max Factor primer and I need to see if I still have the perfect blur so I can dig it out and try it! I hated porefessional, probably because I tried spreading it across my whole face instead of just using it where i'm oily in my t zone but I ended up selling mine! I also HATED instablur! That is one of the worst primers I've ever used. LOVE this post! I am so obsessed with primers.

My current favourites are Bare Minerals Brightening Foundation Primer (i have repurchased twice) and the Mecca Cosmetica Soft Focus Smoothing Primer.

    1. Glad I could help! They help me a lot especially when my skin gets dry or oily, they help to control that aspect as well! <3

  5. My favourite primer is The Body Shop Instablur, it really smooths over everything and controls oil. I've heard that that Max Factor one is like glue and keeps your makeup on forever!

    1. Insta Blur is definitely Top two for me! The Max Factor one is definitely a more sticky primer and does a super great job, especially in the heat! <3
